Sharmaine: Getting your Coffee Fix in Sheffield

Ah, exams. The libraries are crammed with students, notes strewn everywhere and coffee stains are abundant (sorry, books). I've never been a huge fan of coffee till my time in the university began. Now coffee is what keeps me going when I wake up at 7.30am in the morning and prepare for a days worth of lectures, seminars and revising.

Here are 5 places I've discovered that do great pick me up's throughout the day (forget places like Costa and Starbucks when you can find so many more independent shops!)

1. Upshot Espresso

My all time favourite coffee can be found at Upshot Espresso. Located just 5 minutes away from the Students Union, Upshot Espresso serves coffee straight from the heart. The baristas there are pretty rad (go and see for yourself!) and they take pride in what they do. They also love to experiment with new flavours, such as matcha green tea latte. Best part? They serve sweet treats - look at them donuts. YUM.

2. Tamper Coffee

Tamper is one of the best known cafes in Sheffield. With 2 locations, the one along West Street is perfect for students on their way to school from home. They dabble with a huge variety of beans from across the globe and also whip up breakfast and lunch to go or sit in. It's also a great place to catch up with friends. If you're keen on trying their brunch menu, head to the outlet at Ardunel Street. It's pretty massive and my friends love heading there for brunch.

3. Motore Café

On your way to the train station and forgot to grab your daily dose of caffeine? Have no fear, motore cafe is here! This tiny mobile van operates from Monday-Friday, 7.30am-2.30pm along Howard Street and serves coffee to go for weary eyed locals on their way to work. If you're ever hopping on a train out of Sheffield in the morning give this place a try, they do pretty great coffees and they sell brownies for those of you looking for a bite to eat!

4. We are Laundry

Located right next to Tamper, we are laundry has a completely different concept from the rest of the cafes. They're a hair salon... and they sell coffee and cakes. The people there are amazing, I've only paid a visit once but their cakes are great for tea! They also serve fresh pressed juices, which are a good alternative to coffee. Pay them a visit when you can, I'm quite sure you won't regret it.

5. Ink and Water

Last but certainly not least is Ink and Water. A tiny little cafe, I should be an equity partner having spent most of my dollars at this coffee shop. I love how cosy the place is, and most of all how friendly the staff are! Although they don't serve proper lunch food, they do have amazing coffee and a selection of cakes, brownies, sandwiches and flapjacks. They're also located at West One, and it's great for those who live in the area.

Opening Hours
Monday – Friday 8.30am - 5pm
Saturday 11am - 5pm

That's all I have for you guys today, hopefully this post will show you how it's important to support independent shops to keep them going! And all the best for those whose exams are coming up :)
